African Nations Cup - INTO THE FUTURE

Back at home after the Tournament, there has been huge speculation as to whether or not Trott Moloto will have an extended run as the SA National Coach
He should not be under scrutiny as he has delivered at the highest level and to lose to Nigeria is no disgrace.

The Mark Fish issue is something well documented regarding Club Versus Country commitments. However, the most important criteria is that we have the best players available for the important Internationals e.g. World Cup Qualifiers and not necessarily International Friendlies.

The decision to appoint a foreign or local coach will be debated but I for one would like to take the route of surrounding Trott Moloto with better-equiped assistant coaches, with proven track-records and good people-skills.
There will also be a need to re-think this squad and examine the differences between the victorious 1996 team and the present one - mainly the flexibility of the midfield players.
In 1996 there were the two work-horses, Linda Buthelezi and Eric Tinkler, the flair and brilliance of a younger John 'Shoes' Moshoeu, and the most talented of all South African players, Dr Khumalo.
There is nobody in Trott Moloto's selection who could come close to matching either of the latter two at their peak.

This World Cup Qualifying period is going to be SAFA's Waterloo, and the way Bafana Bafana are playing and the unpredictability of the playing conditions and teams in Africa make it a Lottery!

I doubt whether any of the World's Football Super-powers would find it easy to qualify in Africa. It would be interesting to see the result Kevin Keegan's English side would get in Lagos, Nigeria!

I think South Africa was truly blessed to have both won the 1996 African Cup of Nations Tournament and then qualified for the World Cup at their first attempts - daunting tasks! It might be a long time before this happens again.

Good Luck Trott Moloto, Good Luck Bafana Bafana!
